We take you behind the scenes on our latest photoshoot
Being asked to photograph a range of decadent cakes and cheesecakes for South Auckland-based Decor Cakes? Sounded like a sweet gig (‘scuse the pun), so we were all in. After all, who are we to turn down such a delicious opportunity?
While food photography might look like all fun and frosting, there is an immense amount of behind-the-scenes magic that happens before the first image is shot. At Shout + Co., we pride ourselves on a meticulous process that ensures every crumb looks its absolute best.
STEP 1 - PREP.
For this shoot, preparation was everything. Our prep list included:
Cameras, fresh batteries and cleared memory cards.
The lighting set up and custom-matched backgrounds.
A curated selection of forks, cake stands, linens, and glassware.
The "Survival" Kit, our trusty toolkit filled with things like bamboo sticks (a food stylist’s best friend!), scissors, tape and even spray bottles.
STEP 2 - PLANNING.
The heart of any successful shoot is the production plan. We worked closely with the team at Decor Cakes to develop a detailed shot list. This document is our on-the-day bible as it were, covering everything from specific prop pairings to the exact ingredients needed for styling. By getting client sign-off beforehand, we ensure that not a single garnish is overlooked.

STEP 3 - SET UP.
Once the van is packed with everything we need for the shoot, we head to the location. As self-diagnosed A-types, the first thing we do upon arrival is a "reccy" of the space. We set up an organised, tidy station so we can work with maximum efficiency.

STEP 4 - THE SHOOT.
Food photography is a physical game. We spent nearly 6 hours on-site at Decor Cakes, mostly on our feet and moving equipment to get the perfect angles (comfy shoes and clothes are non-negotiable…). One team member is always dedicated to ticking off the shot list and noting specific details to help streamline the post-production and editing phase.

STEP 5 - WRAP UP.
Even after the final shot is taken, the job isn’t over. We double-check the list, pack the van with the same care we used in the morning and head back to the studio. No matter how late the day ends, we always unpack and restock the equipment and prop cupboards immediately. It’s all part of what works for us, ensuring we’re ready to hit the next work day running for the next big project.
