3 branding myths we need to stop believing (and what to do instead)

The world of branding can feel incredibly noisy: just spend five minutes scrolling through TikTok or Instagram and you’ll find a mountain of contradictory advice telling you exactly what you must do to make your product-based business succeed.

It’s exhausting and overwhelming, especially for small business owners and those venturing into the business world for the first time.

We’ve worked with a lot of brands over the years so we’ve developed a finely tuned appreciation for what works and what doesn’t… what will get your brand noticed and what will waste your marketing budget.

Today, we’re busting three of the biggest branding myths holding businesses back and showing you what actually moves the needle.

MYTH ONE: You need a massive budget to look premium
There is a big difference between looking expensive and looking intentional. You do not need a five-figure agency retainer or a massive production budget to build a premium brand identity when you're just starting out. Premium branding comes down to consistency and clarity. A clean, well thought-out colour palette, a top notch typography pairing and a cohesive visual layout will beat a disorganised, expensive rebrand every single time. Stop waiting for a massive influx of cash to start acting like a premium brand and start by mastering the simple elements you already have.

MYTH TWO: A pretty aesthetic is all that matters
Don't get us wrong, we love a beautiful aesthetic. A gorgeous Instagram grid or a stunning colour palette is fantastic for stopping the scroll. But if your brand has only got pretty to fall back on to, it’s really just built on a shaky foundation. Aesthetics get people to look - brand strategy gets them to buy. If your visuals aren't backed by a deep understanding of your target audience, clear messaging and a seamless customer experience, that pretty grid won't translate into sales. Your branding needs to communicate your value proposition instantly. Why should someone care about your product? Why should they buy from you and not someone else? Why should they spend their hard-earned cash on your product or service? Answer these questions by providing value, showcasing your expertise and showing (rather than telling) the customer why you’re a cut above the rest.

MYTH THREE: You have to follow every trend to stay relevant
Whether it’s a specific editing style, a trending audio format, or a sudden obsession with a particular font family, trends come and go at lightning speed. Trying to pivot your entire brand identity to match the flavour of the month is a fast track to burnout and audience confusion. When you constantly change your look to chase trends, you dilute your brand recognition. The most successful brands are the ones that stay true to their core identity while making subtle, deliberate modern adjustments over time. Lean into timeless foundations rather than fleeting fads. This also underpins MYTH ONE above, because premium brands are timeless rather than fleeting.

Ultimately, branding isn’t about perfection, impressive bank accounts, or jumping on every trend, it’s about knowing who you are, knowing who your customer is, and showing up consistently in a way that is authentic and real.
