DIGITAL MARKETING TIP OF THE WEEK: Niche Hashtags

packaging-photography

This is a great tip especially if you are a service-based business looking to pitch to a potential client. It's also useful if you're a product-based business, which I'll share with you at the end!

Make use of NICHE HASHTAGS that you can direct your potential client to
if they'd like to see examples of your work.

WHAT DO I MEAN?
Say you're a Digital Marketer and you're pitching video work to a new client. They ask to see examples of videos you've done before. How do you explain to them that they can go on to your Instagram / LinkedIn and search through your 543 posts to find the videos that you've uploaded?

What if there was an easier way?

Imagine handing over a niche hashtag that they can look up in the Instagram / LinkedIn search bar that allows them to see every video you've shared in one place?

WHAT ARE NICHE HASHTAGS?
"Niche" refers to the popularity of a hashtag.
They have very few posts against them - if any at all. For the purposes of this tip, you want to create a hashtag that has ZERO content against it except for yours...

#video is a super popular hashtag because it has over 53m posts on Instagram alone. We call this a "competitive" hashtag - and not what you want to be using in this case.

#shoutandcovideo though is niche (with only the content I have created for my videos).

You can see how popular a hashtag is by typing it into the search bar in Instagram: underneath the term, it will show you how many posts have been published using that hashtag.

WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT?

  1. Because you want to make it as easy as possible for a client to see your awesome work without having to put too much work into finding it

  2. You get to use Instagram and Linkedin as a digital portfolio, with sub-portfolios within that

  3. When you craft a hashtag that is totally unique to you and your business, you own that little slice of the internet

HOW DO I FIND A GOOD NICHE HASHTAG?

  • Use words that are very specific to what you want to show your client: e.g. do you want them to see your video / interviews / logos?

  • Include your business name as part of it too so your business owns that space

  • Before you start using it, make sure that no one else is using it / has used it.

WHAT IF I'M A PRODUCT BASED BUSINESS? WILL THIS WORK FOR ME TOO?
Absolutely.

Tie it back to the most regularly asked questions your customers / shoppers send you. For example, if you get a lot of queries around "Do you have any animal-print illustrations?", add that niche hashtag to any posts related to that content.

If you sell clothes for men, women and kids and get asked on a regular basis "what baby clothes do you stock?", then add that niche hashtag to those related posts.
